About

Gakkou no Kaidan is a game for the Sega Saturn console. It was released in 1995 to accompany the live-action movie Gakkou no Kaidan. It was available only in Japan, in Japanese.

Storyline

The game is an interactive adventure which includes full-motion video taken from the movie, with the addition of pixel graphics overlaid on top of the video image to indicate that the player needs to take an action. For example, when the characters in the video encounter an obstacle, the game player will need to click left, right, or some other key combination in order to continue.
The flame at the right side of the screen shows the player's health. The Haniwa statue at the left indicates how many puzzle pieces the player has collected. Haniwa statues are clay mementos which were traditionally used in funerals, and sometimes buried with the dead. In the game, the player takes on the role of one of the children trying to find a way out of the haunted schoolhouse. Pieces of the shattered Haniwa are scattered throughout the school. As the player navigates through the school, some locations bring up a video sequence. Other items in the school are clues, and health items.
